VERSATILITY TO BE KEY WORD AT USAC 4 CROWN NATIONALS
ROSSBURG,
OH (Sept. 17) -- Versatility may well be a key factor in Saturday’s
portion of this weekend’s Chevrolet sponsored An American
Revolution Weekend at Eldora Speedway, as several drivers will
be doing double and even triple duty in the represented USAC
(United States Auto Club) open wheel divisions. On the card
will be USAC’s three National divisions – Midgets,
Sprints and Silver Crown.
Headlining the list of confirmed drivers that
will be doing triple duty are the Tony Stewart Racing (TSR)
team cars, sponsored by Chevrolet, as driven by Levi Jones and
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
Jones, the 2005 USAC National Sprint champion
will be heading into the Eldora event as the current points
leader with a 104 point margin over Darren Hagen, while Stenhouse
is ranked fifth. Stenhouse, meanwhile is third in the National
Midget standings, while Jones is seventh. Stenhouse is subbing
in the TSR ride for Tracy Hines who was hurt in a non-racing
accident shortly after the season began. Hines has indicated
that he will be on hand Saturday night to witness the action.
Perennial USAC standout Dave Darland is also
shooting for three wins. Always a 4 Crown standout, Darland
has a total of 5 wins to his credit, including the previous
two Silver Crown events on the one-half mile clay oval. His
resume also reflects victories in the Sprint and Midget portions.
Current national Midget points leader Jerry
Coons, Jr. is also expected to do triple duty, while NASCAR’s
J.J. Yeley is among those committed to two divisions and is
seeking a ride in the third. Yeley has filed entries for the
Midget and Sprint classes, and with two previous Silver Crown
wins at Eldora to his credit, should have little trouble finding
a ride in that division.
As the entries continue to roll in, the number
of drivers doing multiple duty is expected to increase.
Saturday’s action kicks off at 2:30 with
hot laps and time trials for all three divisions, while the
racing action will take the green flag at 7:30 PM.
Kicking off the weekend will be Friday’s
invasion of the World of Outlaw (WoO) Sprint cars plus the first
leg of the 4 Crown Nationals featuring the UMP (United Midwestern
Promoters) Modifieds, with a race time of 7:30 PM.
