NASCAR’S
J.J. YELEY RETURNING TO USAC ROOTS AT ELDORA SATURDAY
ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 20) -- USAC (United States
Auto Club) racing served as the springboard to notoriety for
Arizona’s J.J. Yeley, currently ranked 19th in the NASCAR
Nextel Cup point standings. His memories and fondness for open
wheel racing, coupled with an open date, will see him return
to his roots in a busy way this Saturday during USAC’s
portion of Chevy’s An American Revolution weekend at Eldora
Speedway.
Yeley, who used his phenomenal 2003 USAC season
as a springboard to notoriety, has confirmed his intentions
to compete in the National Midget and Sprint Car potions of
the 26th annual Four Crown Nationals, and is hoping that a ride
develops within the Silver Crown portion as well.
Already a three-time Four Crown winner, Yeley’s
Midget and Sprint rides will be carrying the familiar number
1, as earned in 2003 during his last full season with USAC.
Traditionally, USAC reserves that number for defending champions,
and it was in 2003 that Yeley became only the second driver
in USAC history to capture their coveted Triple Crown with championships
in the Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown divisions, which will
all be competing Saturday on Eldora’s famed clay oval.
Ironically, the other driver to have captured that distinction
is Eldora’s current track owner, fellow NASCAR superstar
Tony Stewart. Stewart will be fielding entries in all three
divisions, as well, for his drivers, Levi Jones and Ricky Stenhouse,
Jr.
Yeley has maintained close ties with the open
wheel world, with a stable of his own. His DRC chassis Midget
will carry a power plant prepared by longtime sponsor Gary Stanton,
while his Sprint endeavor will be aboard a Spike chassis with
a California based Fontana engine.
At the tender age of 16, the Phoenix native
was the youngest driver in USAC history to obtain one of their
highly sought after driver license’s. His first taste
of Eldora victory came during the 2000 Four Crown with a Silver
Crown triumph. The following year he double dipped with victories
in both the Midget and Silver Crown portions.
Preceding Saturday’s USAC Nationals,
will be a full program on Friday night, featuring the winged
World of Outlaw (WoO) Sprints in their final Eldora appearance
of 2007, along with the UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) Modifieds
who will actually kick off leg number one of the annual Four
Crown. Racing action both nights gets underway at 7:30 PM.
