SCOUTS
TO STAGE CAMPOREE AT ELDORA SPEEDWAY
(FOR MORE INFORMATION, SEE THE FOLLOWING LINK: SCOUT
NIGHT INFORMATION PAGE)
ROSSBURG,
OH (August 25) – Continuing a tradition that was begun
three years ago, Eldora Speedway has teamed up with the
Miami Valley Council of Boy Scouts America to host a Camporee
over the weekend of the UMP (United Midwestern Promoters)
National Championships (October 8-10).
The busy weekend will include scout sponsored activities
and displays in the reserved campgrounds (Eldora Village
across from the main gate), a racing meet and greet session
and the flag raising ceremonies at the UMP Nationals on
October 9. All scouts in uniform will be admitted to the
Eldora racing events free of charge that weekend.
The event was the brainchild of Bob DeWar, Darke District
Executive of the Miami Valley Council, in 2008, in an effort
to offer scouts a camping experience that combined traditional
scouting activities within a unique setting. Over 125 scouts
participated in the initial event and that number doubled
last year, despite inclement weather.
“We are excited about this opportunity to combine
scouting, camping and racing”, commented DeWar. “I
have to admit, I knew nothing about racing back in 2008,
but having had the ability to share this experience with
the kids, I can understand why racing is so popular. This
Camporee has become a hit on our annual calendar of events”.
DeWar is quick to point out that although the event is sponsored
through the Miami Valley Council, the Camporee is open to
all Scouts (Venturers, Boy Scouts, Webelos). Event details
will be posteed on www.mvcbsa.com or DeWar may be contacted
at bdewar@bsamail.org.
